Background:

Carrie Walker (she/her) is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S), and EMDRIA Certified Therapist in EMDR with a strong passion for helping individuals find peace and relief from their challenges and struggles in life. She has worked with a wide variety of adults, children and families in different settings and in different stages of need over the past 22 years. She is goal-driven, person-centered, and interpersonal in her approach. Carrie utilizes Internal Family Systems, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, EMDR, DBT, and Play therapy/Expressive Arts interventions with the individuals she serves. She often incorporates a sand tray, mandalas, and mindfulness exercises in her work. She has specialized training in the areas of trauma, attachment, mindfulness work, parenting, addiction, LGBTQ+ individuals, and the use of non-traditional expressive therapies. Carrie has also been trained in the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics by Dr. Bruce Perry and completed her certification as a Trauma Practitioner through the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children. She is certified as an AcuDetox specialist through NADA to perform auricular acupuncture, which can be helpful to assist in treating trauma, anxiety, addiction/cravings, and overall stress management. She completed her Board Certification as a Transgender Care Therapist to support her experience and work with gender fluid and transgender individuals. She is also certified in the treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

In addition to her work with individuals, Carrie is specialized in couples and relationship counseling. She has completed Levels 1, 2, and 3 of the Gottman Method training, as well as additional specialized Gottman training in treating trauma and infidelity. She highly values the wisdom and expertise of Esther Perel and enjoys working with couples from all backgrounds, genders, and sexual orientations.

Carrie loves her work and wholeheartedly believes in the power of a trusting, collaborative, therapeutic relationship. She maintains close working relationships with other professional in the community and actively provides individuals and families with referrals for supplemental and complementary services when deemed appropriate. Carrie has been honored 6 times over a 7-year period with a Best in Bedside Manner Award from Our Health Magazine. She was also one of three finalists for the Altria Rising Star Award through the National Association of Women Business Owners. Carrie obtained her MBA from The College of William & Mary and provides professional business consultation to professionals around the country as part of her consulting firm, Richmond Creative Consulting, LLC.

Carrie enjoys providing clinical supervision to individuals seeking licensure as a Professional Counselor or who are pursuing their registration as a Play Therapist with the Association for Play Therapy. With a fully-stocked play therapy room and several outpatient offices filled with therapeutic resources, Carrie enjoys engaging supervisees in experiential supervision to help build and enhance confidence/skills and improve self-awareness as a clinician. Carrie has a non-dogmatic approach to supervision and views the supervisory relationship as one of mutual growth and respect. She provides APT and NBCC-approved trainings to clinicians on various topics, including play therapy, trauma, and working with gender and sexual diversity.

In addition to overseeing Richmond Creative Counseling and working as a psychotherapist, Carrier spends her free time with her teenage kid, four-legged besties, reading all the books she can find, hanging outdoors, and dabbling in art.
